Letter from the President

Message from President and Chairman of the Board

Dear Friends,

Each year we take the time to reflect upon the progress the school has made to better accomplish its mission assisting students achieve their fullest potential.  This year we can’t help but think how the school’s past, present and future are inextricably linked.

The many historic photographs on display on our campus, remind us of the generations of students that MSB has served since first opening its doors in 1853.  Speaking to grateful MSB alumni we hear of the dedication of MSB staff and the quality of the opportunities to launch promising futures for students all across Maryland.

The present is all around us.  Every day brings us face to face with the hundreds of students we serve throughout Maryland.  We witness their progress, their challenges and triumphs, and their daunting, often inspiring road to adulthood.

As we look to the future we are optimistic as we experience success in the phases of constructing the school of the future.  What lies ahead in the months and years to come in our ongoing work to build the school of the future?

Ironically, the current master plan looked progressively forward by re-embracing MSB’s 100 year old cottage program that teaches students independent living skills in home like settings.  We are excited that we will also be breaking ground in July 2012 on a state of the art educational facility for our students with multiple disabilities.

These are important steps forward that will assist other students like BJ Petersen, Josh Gregory and Daniel Salembene illustrated in this report. These stories also highlight our school credo -   “...... tenderness for what he is and respect for what he may become.” (Pasteur)

None of these accomplishments, in fact MSB itself, would have been possible without the individual, foundation, corporate and legislative support we have received.  We cannot stress how grateful we are. You really are making a major difference in the lives of many young Marylanders who are blind or visually impaired, many of whom have multiple disabilities.

Sincerely,

Michael J. Bina, Ed. D.
