Educational Support
Our services enhance students' learning experiences

and help meet their individual needs.

 

Educational Support services consist of: Speech/Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Health Services, Social Work, Psychology, Transition, Assistive Technology and Outreach.

Speech/Language Therapy provides assessments, treatments, and consultation for students with a variety of communication disorders. Oral motor and feeding impairments, language disorders and the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems are some of the many areas addressed.

Occupational Therapy addresses visual perceptual skills, organizational strategies, splinting, fine motor coordination, feeding, handwriting, adaptive equipment needs and coordination.

Physical Therapy provides assessments, consultation, training, and treatment in the following areas: gross motor development, postural control, transfers, gait/mobility training, wheelchair skills, therapeutic exercise, fitness training, range of motion, assistive devices and positioning equipment.

Health Services are provided 24 hours/day by nurses who are experienced in pediatrics. The Health Center is overseen by Debbie Badawi, M.D.  who is on call to the nursing staff 24 hours/day.

Social Work provides crisis intervention, individual/family/group/play therapy, psychosocial family assessments, parent support groups and serves as a link between MSB, families and various social agencies.

Psychology addresses the special needs of those students who are autistic by providing appropriate programming through staff training and consultation; provides psychological evaluations for students; works to develop behavior programs for students that will decrease problematic behaviors; and supports health center in monitoring behavior changes once students have been prescribed medication.

Transition assists parents and students with identifying needs related to employment, continued education and or/training, day care, financial resources, medical care, respite and in home supports, supported living and recreation.

Assistive Technology develops, coordinates and expands assistive technology programs and services for students. Assistive technology devices can be used to help nonverbal students communicate, interact with their environment, play with toys and access the computer.

Outreach provides diagnostic evaluations, consultations, functional low vision evaluations and training for students, parents and teachers throughout Maryland on issues related to visual impairment and blindness. Specialty areas include audiology, low vision, computer literacy, Braille literacy and skills of daily living.
