Music Education & Music Therapy The Maryland School for the Blind’s Music Education and Music Therapy programs strive for excellence in helping students develop their full potential. All areas of development are encouraged through:
Music therapy makes a real difference in the lives of students at MSB, especially those students with developmental and physical disabilities, brain injuries and mental health needs. The following programs are offered in the Music Department: General: music classes designed concurrently with the Baltimore County Music Curriculum. Music Enrichment: classes designed to encourage and broaden the student’s cultural and historical awareness and stimulate their imagination Group/Individual Music Therapy: sessions which encourage self-expression, communication, socialization and promote rehabilitative goals. Prep Choir: where students ages 5-12 learn basic singing skills, performance skills and develop a repertoire of songs Concert Choir: where students ages 12-21 learn more advanced singing skills, performance skills and develop a larger repertoire of songs Spring Madrigals: an auditioned, touring group meeting during the Spring Semester made up of students ages 16-21 who perform an advanced repertoire of songs Percussion Ensemble: exploration of percussive styles and techniques. This group performs at special functions and school events Switch Choirs: where students of all ages and developmental needs make music with the use of assistive technology. The Blue Duffs: an auditioned jazz ensemble which tours throughout the greater Baltimore area and performs at school events.
