Research

At MSB, we need to increase our understanding of how students learn and we strive for new, innovative ways to improve the quality of our programs and services. This is achieved, in part, through research.

The quality and cost effectiveness of MSB’s programs is directly related to our ability to evaluate our programs and match the needs of students with the effectiveness of our efforts. Asking and answering questions on educational practices is facilitated through an ongoing research program.

EVALUATION

Outcome studies have been conducted at MSB for 15 years. Graduates are asked where they live and where they work. Comparisons of these answers are made to national studies and are followed by MSB to see how we compare to other schools. These studies are important as we identify employment opportunities and prepare our students to obtain gainful employment

Evaluation of new technology also occurs. For example, MSB has been involved in the evaluation of head mounted displays for use in teaching students how to travel safely in various environments. This study demonstrated that equipment originally designed for adults with visual impairment could be of benefit to our students.

INNOVATION GRANTS PROGRAM

MSB’s Innovation Grants Program was established to provide modest financial support to MSB faculty and staff to pursue innovative ideas that advance MSB as a center of excellence in the education and career development of visually impaired children. Specifically, the Innovation Grants are designed to provide money for pilot projects and innovative demonstrations. This years grants include a study of play therapy, the development of a model career education program, and pilot testing of new techniques in oral motor treatment. MSB has funded over 25 different innovative ideas that have contributed to the improvement of the quality of education provided to the students.

INTER-INSTITUTIONAL AGREEMENT

MSB has an inter-institutional agreement with Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University. This affords us the opportunity to take advantage of the resources of the world’s leading eye care research hospital, and provides the most up-to-date knowledge to be available to our students and staff.

CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS AND PUBLISHED RESEARCH

MSB Staff have recognized the importance of presenting and publishing the findings of our work. Staff present at local, national and international conferences including North Central Association of Schools for the Visually Handicapped Vocational Conference, Association for Education & Rehabilitation of the Blind & Visually Impaired (AER International), National Braille Association, Low Vision International, International Mobility Conference, and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Staff have also published in the major professional journals including The Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, Music Therapy Perspectives, Optometry and Vision Science, Investigative, and Ophthalmology and Vision Science. A list of publications is available upon request.
